Is your baby happy and healthy?

Find out with SafeBaby

Our mission statement says it all: to create life-saving products. It’s not like we set the bar low or anything, right? As the holding company for innovative products like the SafeBaby Pillow or the Safe Baby Belt, we like to think that IstoMedical lives up to its word.

Our History

When Nicholas Rossis, IstoMedical’s owner, had his daughter, Natalie, he did what every dad does — looked for ways to keep her safe.

After using a sleep positioner for the first couple of months, he realized this wasn’t enough. What if there was a better way to give parents peace of mind for years?

He then came across an innovative idea by biomedical engineer Alexander Astaras and his team, who had developed the award-winning Maia cot. Armed with a variety of sensors, Maia monitored a baby and reported on her well-being.

Thus, what started as a dad’s simple question — how to keep Natalie safe — soon became an idea for a sleep product aimed at babies that monitors their key vitals during sleep and notifies parents via a phone app should anything be amiss.

What Is SafeBaby Pillow?

Keep your baby safe

Nicholas and Alexander joined forces to create SafeBaby — the baby (pun intended) of this idea. It uses a combination of five simple and advanced sensors to monitor the baby while she sleeps:

  • Microphone
  • Thermometer
  • Pressure sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Magnetometer

The sensors may be attached to either a sleep positioner (wedge pillow) or a washable underpad. This multitude of sensors is necessary because they constantly check each other to avoid false positives/negatives through so-called sensor data fusion, i.e. the simultaneous processing of multiple types of sensor data.

For example, the microphone may report a lack of sound. Is the baby OK? The AI checks the pressure sensor: no baby lies on the underpad. No need for worry, then.

Keep your baby comfy

That’s not all, though! Is your baby restless at night? Do you wish she would sleep through the night? What if you knew what was bothering her instead of having to guess?

The same technology that keeps your baby safe can be used to monitor sleep quality. If you so choose, the data from the sensors is anonymized and stored so you can securely save it for your pediatrician. For example, the thermometer data will tell you if the room is too cold or too hot.

What Is SafeBaby Belt?

While the SafeBaby Pillow is our, well, firstborn, we are already working on the next product, the SafeBaby Belt. This is aimed at premature babies rather than full-term ones.

One out of ten babies born in the US is born prematurely, placing them at a higher risk for death or health issues. A common cause for this is the fact that 5-7% of premature babies are born with collapsed lungs. The procedure to save these babies is actually pretty simple; the pediatrician must blow air into the lungs to inflate them. However, too little or too much air, and the baby doesn’t survive. So, the doctor must know precisely how much air to use.

The SafeBaby belt uses sensors similar to those of the SafeBaby Pillow, but the data is handled in drastically different ways. With SafeBaby Belt, the sensors listen for the tell-tale signs of an inflating lung and watch for the baby’s chest expanding. They then notify the doctor exactly when it’s time to stop. Armed with this knowledge, a doctor is in a much better position to help the baby survive.
